TDKR - post 1 - SPOILERS UNDER CUT

Okay, as I wind down from this weekend, my Batman thoughts accumulate, and I really need to get them out of my brain.

This first post is going to be about TDKR as a political allegory and why that's total bs.

For the greater good, and other great lines from Hot Fuzz )

Tales of a Batfan

I was planning to write my review of TDKR, but instead I'm writing this post to say that my heart goes to all those who were wounded or killed in Aurora CO, their families and their loved ones. I went to a midnight showing of TDKR last night, and I am beyond words to describe how utterly horrifying it is to think that people, who were just as excited as I was about TDKR, were gunned down by a psychopath who coldly and calculatedly planned his massacre.

I feel it's incredibly tasteless to write my thoughts about TDKR, squeeful as they are, when this hangs over our heads.

But I would say this: today, after hearing about the shootings, I pondered refunding the ticket I already bought for Monday to see the movie again. I'm not of this opinion anymore. Not going out and having the pleasure of seeing this movie in the company of other fans and Batlovers is exactly what that fucking piece of shit wanted to achieve after the bloodbath ended, and I'm not giving him the satisfaction. He will rot in jail, probably in solitary for the rest of his little life because reportedly prisoners do not take kindly to child killers. Which he is. Intentionally.

This post has no happy ending, because I'm not happy. I am incredibly sad and angry over this, and I can't find it in me to write a more hopeful resolve. I feel the rage of a fan who knows their kin was targeted last night. Maybe it's time to turn off the internet for the day.

Help Us Support Planned Parenthood

Join us in standing up for reproductive health and education. Planned Parenthood, the organization that delivers reproductive health care, sex education and information to millions of people worldwide, has come under fire in the U.S. lately, with many politicians on both state and federal level seeking to end funding (and in a few cases succeeding).

During the month of May, you can send a specially designed Planned Parenthood vgift to your friends to help support this cause. (And if you need someone to send it to, [livejournal.com profile] frank is always happy to receive gifts!) There are three variations ($1, $5 and $10) for you to choose from, but they'd all look good on your profile when your friends know that you stand by something so important.

Thank you all for your help in our support for Planned Parenthood. This promotion ends June 1, 2012; LiveJournal is not affiliated with Parent Parenthood. For more information about Planned Parenthood, please visit: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/

So. Anyone wants a vgift?

As you know [livejournal.com profile] deirdre_c is one of my favorite people, internet and otherwise. She normally reserves her considerably awesome vidding gifts for SPN fandom, but she has chosen to make a quick foray into Sherlock fandom.

And this is the amazing result

On Megaupload, internet piracy, SOPA/PIPA/NDAA and big rich companies milking a cow without milk

Thems the facts:

1. The US is in recession. So is the majority of Europe. China and many Arab countries have incredibly strict internet censorship. India seems to be a free agent. So this is your crowd: People who are mostly out of money but are huge consumers of culture in its many variants.

2. Cinema tickets have been on an incredibly steep rise for the past decade, in direct correlation with the plummeting of the economy. First it was sheer post-9/11 escapism, then it was 3D, now it's IMAX. In NYC, a ticket to see an IMAX 3D movie in peak time has already got to $20. If you think the outer areas are cheaper, you're right, but the average salary is lower too.

3. Television is also more expensive. Time Warner Cable offers a "basic" monthly cable plan in NY that starts at $80. That is without channels like HBO, Starz, Showtime and On Demand movies, not to mention subscriptions to specialized sports channels/events, or even pay-per-view. Don't even get me started on porn. And I don't know about you, but in my building, Time Warner has basically bribed the management company to give them exclusive rights to cable access. I've been given to understand that this has become a standard practice.

4. Technology is more expensive. We don't have to start discussing the wide profit margin Apple, LG, BlackBerry, HP and Dell make off their consumers, right? They all have essentially the same Chinese prison-plant making them their gadgets at a cost that is financially dirt cheap, but also treats people like dirt. I'm an Apple consumer. My hands are not clean. I'm merely stating facts.

5. File storage has become vital. Western Digital is making a fortune on physical storage, and domains, blog services, photobucket-like websites and actual storage websites like Megaupload all provide answers to the rapidly increasing demand in storing media and documents which accumulate beyond the average computer/tablet's memory.

So what are we looking at? We're looking at a global community which is groaning under the weight of its addiction to culture. But this is not a weight made by the addiction itself. It's made by the nature of power-hungry, greedy companies, looking to profit as much as possible from their consumers, and those consumers don't have as much money as they used to, if they ever did. And people who can afford everything are a very small percentage of the global community.

And so, like in every community that is hungry but cannot afford food its masters are selling it (oh yes, I'm aware of the Marxist undertones here), thieving spreads.

Another factor taken into account: We have just turned a technological corner from undigitized media. CDs are being discontinued. The era of DVDs and Blu-Ray will come to an end sooner rather than later. Storage is everything now. This is a mitigating factor in the greediness of big companies who create the media content, because the collapse of CDs was a lethal blow to record companies and their parent companies, who counted on charging as much as possible for their products (while essentially shutting the artists out of the profits).

So we are looking at a monster that is big, hungry and greedy for power and money, with a hand in every plate. We are looking at Cthulhu. And today, Cthulhu took down Megaupload.

Megaupload is probably likely to get heavily indicted. We all know that. We all know what we were funding. Allegedly, they did too, according to some released evidence. The problem is far deeper than Megaupload, though, because Megaupload was simply making a quick buck on creating ideal conditions for a widespread phenomenon of people who cannot afford to consume culture at today's prices, but want it nonetheless.

This is not going to stop. Media companies like Warner Brothers, Sony, Universal and Viacom will continue to create culture and ask for increasing prices for it. People will still not be able to afford those prices. Piracy will continue, because as long as companies don't recognize the need for balance, they will not get the results they want. And no unleashing of governmental dragons in form of laws or indictments will help them, or us, the consumers.

What a shithole.

A Scandal in MY PANTIES

Holy shit, do I love the new "Sherlock" episode. Even if the female characters were kinda wonky (and really, Stephen Moffat, you're making Chris Nolan look fucking balanced in comparison), there is SO MUCH  in this episode that I fucking LOVED. I keep rewatching for the good parts, namely: everything that has to do with Sherlock, Mycroft, Watson, Sherlock and Watson, Sherlock and SHEET. Also MYCROFT. My god, this episode could've only gotten better if Tom Hardy played Irene Adler's male counterpart or something, but who needs something that would give me a brain aneurysm, really. This was perfection enough.

Now I need icons.

I feel like 2012 is about to be the most emotional year of this decade, don't even know why.

Hopefully, it will be a good one.

Yes, yes, it's me, the amazing bandwagon-bouncing knigget

MY SEMESTER IS FINALLY OVER OMG. This morning shall be FULL of Stef and TDKR prologue! :D

Now, for the meme, which I have stolen from [livejournal.com profile] ignited and [livejournal.com profile] regala_electra

Which TV shows did you let go of in 2011?
A whole fucking lot, Supernatural and True Blood being the biggest. My patience ran out, what can I say. Also let go of Big Bang Theory, Leverage and Glee.

Which TV shows did you mean to get into but didn't in 2011? Why?
Homeland, The Wire, In Treatment (both versions), 10th and 11th Doctor, Happy Endings, Parks & Rec. Mostly because I wasn't that interested and/or lazy.

Which TV shows do you intend on checking out in 2012?
See above. :)

Which TV show impressed you least in 2011?
The Borgias. Neil Jordan is running an awful fucking ship.

Which TV show do you think you might let go of in 2012 unless things significantly improve?
Game of Thrones. They will probably kill all my favorite characters at some point and then I will feel no inclination to watch an hour-long depression-fest every week.

Which TV show impressed you the most in 2011? Why?
Community. I've been rewatching the second season the last 2 weeks and marveling at how different it is this season. Plus, it's had a fucking STELLAR run up until the unexpected cutoff the NBC douches have decided on.

Also: Suburgatory. Almost no one I know watches it, but I fucking LOVE it. Some episodes are better than others, but it's always watchable and the cast is absolutely fantastic.

Which TV shows do you think you'll never let go of no matter how crappy they get? Why?
The Daily Show, The Late Late Show and Never Mind The Buzzcocks. By definition, all of them are bound to have weaker episodes because of the unknown factor, so I'm willing to forgive more. I've finally set my limit with scripted shows this year (see: SPN, True Blood and their epic fuckery).

Shows I watched and loved that aren't mentioned on this list because I started them in another year.
30 Rock, The Colbert Report.

***

Your main fandom of the year?
Inception, fuck yeah! I have no idea how I got into it, or why I'm so into it. Nolan is a crafty bastard.

Your favorite film you watched this year?
50/50. I watched quite a few movies this year, and I intend to watch more, but 50/50 is a movie with a real heart, which I loved. And I would probably not have gone to see it if it weren't for [livejournal.com profile] benitle so I'm very grateful for her. :)

Also, THOR. :D

Your favorite book read this year?
I've been really bad with books this year. Started and stopped reading a whole lot of them. I would say though that Russell Brand's "My Booky Wook" is a thoroughly enjoyable autobiography.

Your favorite tv show of the year?
The Mighty Boosh, really. I discovered it this year and it was THE BEST DISCOVERY EVER. :D

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Arthur/Eames, I don't know why or how but I LOVE the fics. I've been incepted, dammit.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
My favorites essentially on their way to leave LJ. It's not just the recent fuckery tbh. I don't see fandom truly moving to DW, but there has been a steady move towards tumblr, and you guys, I don't actually like tumblr all that much. :/

Your fiction boyfriend of the year?
Tomothy, but of course. Celebs to people are as social media is to socializing.

Your fiction girlfriend of the year?
It's a bit sad that it took me a while to think of one, but I guess Florence Welch?

Your biggest squee moment of the year?

:D :D :D :D :D!!!

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?
TDKR AND THE HOBBIT. Just like the rest of the fan community around the world.

Holidays, Sherlock, Batman and Other Fandom-y Things

1. Hanukkah and Christmas are almost upon us! Hanukkah is, as I've iterated before, my favouritest Jewish holiday of them alllllllll (and it always makes me sad when Jon Stewart tries to reconcile it with Pagan Jesustide Christmas), and so my Menorah is already out and waiting to be lit. :D As my Roomie is half-Christian, half-Muslim, I put out some Christmas decorations at her behest. Now my place looks like the clashing of the SPARKLES, or otherwise the kingdom of LED. WUT.

2. I saw Sherlock Holmes you guys, and there was a surprise!TDKR trailer before it (but I'm only spoiling Sherlock Holmes) )

3. Speaking of Batman, I miss "Community". :( I've been marathoning season 2 the last couple of days. So here's an ABSOLUTELY AWESOME fanart of the cast of "Community" as Batman villains:

4. And if we want to be COMPLETELY geeky, here's someone's suggestion for a new "League of Gentlemen":
