Woe befalls the Harry Potter fandom
Jul. 1st, 2004 06:27 pmThe
nocturne_alley Role Playing Game has ended. The most famous fandom RPG that existed almost since the beginning of the Harry Potter fandom itself is now through. Not to be overly dramatic, but this is indeed the end of an era.
Excuse me as I mourn.
ETA: I don't know if I've ever told this in my journal, butI did tell this to
tabiji once. I really owe my discovery of
nocturne_alley to
mistful.
As I was looking in my flist for something interesting, she posted about this journal of a poor guy named
potterstinks. Now, I did have a vague knowledge about RPGs by that time, but still I had no idea what I'd gotten myself into when I pressed the link. No idea whatsoever. Because that night was the night of The Outing (to the ignorant, a night the previous year when Draco Malfoy outed Harry Potter to all and sundry), that so many NrAgers remember fondly. I thought to myself "this is funny!", and their menacing Lucius amused me so much. ;)
So I decided to investigate further into the community, and discovered the flirtatious
seamus_f (who remains my probably first crush over an RPG character), the absolutely riveting
potions_master (whose previous summer contains what I think to be some of the best POV posts ever), and über cool
turpinol, the somewhat-alarming
a_slytherin, the phenomenal
just_harry (whose player should be worshipped for absolute dead-on characterization), the godly
petitemillicent (who never failed to amuse me), the, oh, love incarnated in form of
lupercus whose writing quality is just, for lack of other words, GAH, the tamed silly doggie
jadedsirius, the CAPSLOCKING
knight_to_h3 and his lack of tact that seriously competes mine, the lovable and hilarious
wehaveseven (SO RON, SO DAD), the DEVIOUS!!!
percyneedsalife, the alluring
seekercho, the hazy dazy
dooglevoluna, the ABSOLUTELY NOT EVIL!
perfectprefect, the dry-as-a-bayleaf
scorchtartan, the interestingly-coiffed
dean_thomas, the annoying homewrecker
boot_boy, the unbelievably paranoid and so bloody charming
erniemacmillan, the eye-sporking-post-writer with the green hair
goyle, the lovely Patil sisters
artistic_flower and
divineparvati, the sarcastic yet fetching
sinistra (with the most beautiful unknown woman featuring in her icons), the heart-breaking (literally ;D)
blushcrush, the perfectly nagging
missgranger, the charmingly gullible
wheresmytoad,
onourbrooms and her ever-amusing sense of irony, the frighteningly real
pinkstarsgirly and of course, the ever sexily-evil
purestblood who brought me here in the first place, the sometimes-annoying, sometimes-admirable
blondenarcissa and the incomparable
potterstinks, king of the castle, lord of the manor (well now he is *sniffle*), and ruler of hundreds of hearts, Harry Potter's one between (BWAHAHAHAHAH AT LAST!)
I laughed, rolled actually in laughter, I wibbled, I was stressed, I was sad, I was relieved. I experienced. I lived in this hectic universe along with the characters, because that is the charm of Nocturne Alley. It sweeps you down with it, and you cannot. Stop. Reading. It's a drug, and now we are on extremely harsh and cruel rehab. I shall now stop with this metaphore.
NrAged was a second home to me in fandom, it really was. The competitions over who posts a link first, the insane, midnight-ish theories, the thoughtful analysis threads, all of it was immense fun. And when there was wibbling, the was love to be found in NrAged. Love and support. I don't think the players can ever fully absorbe the fact they helped to create a community of people who are totally strangers, yet help each other, no questions asked. In a way, NrAged is a metaphore for the entire fandom. It sprang out of common interest and grew, but never lost its spirit, never forgot the fun in its name it was created in the first place.
Nothing is left for me now, but yell this:
<3333333333 TO ALL OF YOU!
PLAYERS - YOU DID A FANTASTIC, EXQUISITE JOB!!!
This RPG is nothing less than a RPG masterpiece.
