Tim Gunn came to speak at my school last year. When he walked into the PACKED conference room, I was on my feet and clapping ecstatically before I realized it. Did you hear how he told my sister to bitch slap her snooty department?

The story goes that my sister is working on a PhD in Philosophy in a department that is kind of stupidly patriarchal- when she was applying to the program and they saw her wedding ring, they asked if she was planning on kids, since it slows down dissertating, which.... WHAT. She didn't mention that part to Tim, but did say that when she dresses in a feminine, fashionable way, she feels as though she gets taken less seriously in class. She asked in the q&a if he had recommendations for how to dress in that sort of situation (the talk he was there to give was ostensibly about how to dress for work and adulthood).

Shocked, Tim asked if they really responded that way?

She confirmed that it was the impression she got.

He answered quickly, Well then, you BITCH SLAP THEM.

There was applause. ;)

He then said that she should never take a backwards step like that and that judging from what she was wearing that day, she had great fashion sense (SWOOOOOON) and to wear what she liked and to demand her due respect.
