I had the pleasure of watching tonight's episode with several lovely fandom ladies, and [livejournal.com profile] titti. ;D

So when I saw that tonight's writer was Jeremy Carver I literally squeed out loud, because JEREMY CARVER YOU GUYS. THE GENIUS BEHIND "MYSTERY SPOT".

Only...

Only tonight's episode felt like a Sera ep more than anything (Dean emo? check. Gorgeous Sam awesomeness? check. Random hot chick? check. Gory violence to the point of overdoing? check.). I came to the conclusion afterwards that Jeremy Carver's specialty in SPN ep writing is meta. The guy is a glorious meta writer, and since tonight's ep had literally no meta, the writing was not really at an awesome level that is the signature of Teh Carver (to illustrate, the other eps he wrote for SPN were "Sin City" where we found out a LOT about the demons, AVSC which had not only amazing MotW myth but also amazing wee!chesters and THE AMULET, and "Mystery Spot" which really, do I need to elaborate?). So we got an okay episode, but not a truly fantastic one.

Which is not to say I didn't enjoy, because the meriad of small touches was great; from the Indian guy at the phone company eating junk food and masturbating (and providing a nice callback to Sam's amazing erection-hiding stunt at DaLDoM), Sam conning the girl to talk by being all Sam-ish, Dean eating (YAY) and checking out girls (another signature of Carver is that Dean's brain is seriously downplayed in his eps), and some nice lines. Also DADDY WINCHESTER TALKING! Big plus. And the emo....gnaaaaaaah. Sam finding out that Ruby was lying was, urge. Very much a CUDDLE THE SAMMICH moment right there. :(

But all in all, just a nice ep.

But really, Dean? *HUG* *SMACK UPSIDE THE HEAD* STOP CALLING GIRLS "BITCHES". Really. GRRR.

And now, SLEEP.

I did the same thing. I was happy it was Carver, but it felt...off.

and providing a nice callback to Sam's amazing erection-hiding stunt at DaLDoM

YES!

Was a so-so episode. I'm pretty meh about it.

I told Loony that this felt like a Sera episode and she is listed as the writer in most sites. I bet she did most of the dialogue even though Carver got the actual credit. It has happened before when she wasn't able to finish a script to do do something else.

The premise of the ep sounds far more Sera than Carver too. He's not one to write ze big emo scenes about "is it or is it not daddy dear?".

I also liked the Random Hot Girl who walked past when Dean was on the phone talking about how someone had redefined his definition of necrophilia and gave him a total 'Eew' face. Because really, there must be so many people across America who have had that reaction to overhearing Sam'n'Dean's phone conversations.

I acknowledge all the flaws you point to (and could point to more than a few of my own), but at this point I am so determined to be happy and savor the episodes we have left that I am just ignoring all the ways this ep didn't work and concentrating on the things that were awesome.

HAHAHAHAH, but did that stop Dean from checking her out? NO IT DIDN'T. xD

I know, I know. I just, I know for SURE now that we're not getting ANY mytharc till the season finale, and I kinda feel cheated. :/

Is next week's ep definitely a MotW ep? I am completely unspoiled beyond next week's teaser so I don't know.

I will definitely be bummed if we don't get *any* progress on Dean's deal/Sam's issues next week, not least because I don't have faith that they can wrap all this up in one episode at the end. However, I also remember watching "Dean Man's Blood" and being like, 'What?! Vampires?!' and that turned out to have John and the Colt and stuff that turned out to be mytharc related even though we didn't realize it at the time. So I am not completely without hope.
