I had a wonderful day with "Misha is not heeeeeeere"
memphis86 and "SOOKIE IS MAAAAAAAHN"
regala_electra, having awesome food and sangria, TV and a Johnny Depp movie. Now THAT is what I call a good 4th of July. :D Was tempted by said sirens to stay the night, but since I'm due for stuff tomorrow, I couldn't. TEMPTED, THOUGH. :D
ANYHOO.
Have come to the conclusion why this movie is more than a little meh to me.
Almost every single performance in this movie is just fabulous; Depp is full of pathos, Cotillard is amazingly romantic and sensual, Bale is old-school movie star with sharp angles and impenetrable mind, Crudup is nearly unrecognizable and sleek as a motherfucker.
But everything else about this movie is not romantic in the least.
The cinematography is documentary to the extreme, almost to the point of fucking awful, and it's not making use of nearly any of the natural assets the movie has, whether it's the powerful (and so very pretty) chemistry between Depp and Cotillard, or even the imposing sets and scenes. The sound mixing IS HORRENDOUS, PEOPLE. IT'S A FUCKING DISASTER. If the Academy even THINKS of nominating the sound editing in this movie, Imma start a fucking PETITION to pull their heads out of their asses. The score, most especially, is weak, incoherent and inconsistent. The lighting is also inconsistent, wherein some scenes are gorgeous, and some are just whatever.
I get the feeling that Michael Mann had a certain idea about how the movie should look, but he didn't divulge it to the actors. Or there was a serious case of miscommunication, which, it's Johnny Depp in the lead. He's a fantastic pro. IDK.
Anyway, I'd say, wait for the DVD. The size of the screen is not going to make a big difference, given how extreme the close-ups get at times. (which, WHY?)
I just. Meh.
BUT. JOHNNY DEPP. AND CHRISTIAN BALE. SO YEAH.
